East London Semi-Detached

We were asked to design this East London home for two doctors and their family. The couple asked to refurbish the original Edwardian house and maximise the footprint with a series of extensions. The resulting extensions has nearly doubled the footprint of the original house.
The brief called to open up the ground floor areas to the rear of the house and connect to the large rear garden. The lower level of the rear garden presented the opportunity and we lowered the ground floor extension considerably to create 4m ceiling heights in the new kitchen family space. To connect the space to the large rear garden, considerable glazing was included and south-facing solar shading was introduced which reduces passive solar gains in the summer.
The first floor extension has created a new large office and library space and the loft extension introduced two new bedrooms, an eaves shower room and eaves dressing room. The existing upper floors were also fully renovated with 3 other bedrooms and a large family bathroom.
The design process enabled us to refine an architectural language with red brick and timber fins on the exterior. This architectural language then extended into the interior where we assisted with a full interior design. The joinery and finishes throughout are a continuation of the architectural language working with largely natural finishes.
