A colourful and sustainable reinvention of a London semi-detached home, light, volume and connection, spaces that invite interaction, a home of character.

For the owners of M&M’s House, the brief was to transform their tired Edwardian semi-detached into a distinctive, light-filled home that felt joyful and deeply personal. They wanted every space to work hard for family life while expressing their love of colour, art, and pop culture.

Bethnal Dream reconfiguration

A full refurbishment and thermal retrofit provided the foundation for a series of bold extensions. Solar panels on the roof and an airsource heat pump provide energy in this gas-free design which includes a natural ventilation strategy.

At the rear, a double-height kitchen and dining space opens fully onto the garden, blurring the line between inside and out. The dining table extends to a garden window seat, offering a place to sit close to nature all year round. Above, generous skylights flood the space with daylight, while a “cabinet of curiosities” provides a playful backdrop for gatherings and everyday life.

A snug movie room overlooks the double-height kitchen through internal windows — creating visual connections and moments of surprise between spaces. From the front door to the garden, the home unfolds through framed views and mirrored doors that reflect light and life across the plan.

Upstairs, a new loft extension adds two bedrooms and a bathroom under exposed beams with feature lighting. The interiors were developed closely with the homeowners, blending traditional detailing in the original rooms with a fresh, contemporary palette in the new spaces. Extensive joinery throughout blends functionality with craftsmanship. The result is an eclectic, tactile home that celebrates uniqueness and personality.
